BRUSSELS -- NATO could become involved in a potential Taiwan conflict if fighting reaches U.S. territory in the Pacific, according to a NATO Defense College report released Monday.

The paper from the Rome-based research and education institution, titled "NATO and a Taiwan contingency," is an academic report rather than the bloc's formal position. But analysis of Taiwan's situation in relation to NATO is rare, and it could serve as a reference in the alliance's strategic planning.
