TOKYO -- Military spending in East Asia expanded 6.2% on the year to $411 billion in 2023, a new report shows, as China's growing power and geopolitical tensions fuel an arms buildup in the region.

East Asia accounted for the lion's share of $595 billion spent across Asia and Oceania as a whole, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).
