HANOI -- Former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen was elected Senate president on Wednesday in a move seen thrusting him back to the forefront of Cambodian diplomacy.

Hun Sen stepped down as prime minister in August after nearly four decades in office and was succeeded by his eldest son, Hun Manet. Hun Sen was elected to the Senate this February, when his ruling Cambodian People's Party won 55 of the 58 contested seats.
